Maiko by CoconutCueball Maiko by CoconutCueball
After a week plus of drawing after work during late nights (and making days last longer), I finished this vector of a maiko舞妓. I did this as a gift for one of my students who will be finishing Jr. Highschool this April and going to Kyoto to become a maiko.

Maiko is an apprentice geisha (basically geisha under 20 are called maiko, and then 20+ are geiko)

I'd like to thank :iconmikeroutliffe: :iconsergefoglio: :iconrefuse11: for inspiring me to do vector art through their work.

and Thanks to :icongunslingingeisha: for the sakura brushes used on the umbrella!

Please full view this one ;)

Program: Photoshop CS3 pen tool, brush (for sakura on umbrella)

Wow, improvements!

Thanks man, it has been a long time. This and the Yelle piece are for sure the most time staking ones I've done. As usual, I am looking forward to seeing some stuff from you.

Man you need to take a trip here(Japan) sometime, good local for surreal images;)

cool, I can't wait to see. And yes you do need to come. I am starting a new piece, for the 1st time I will try to make a setting/background as well. I assume it will be long in the making, especially since I am busy with work now :P

the ochaya is called kanouya 叶家 and is in Gion-higashi 祇園東 (which is part of the area also reffered to as hana-machi 花町;).
Its a really long-time established tea house. Don't know her professional name though.

I found out information on the Kanouya Okiya in Gion Higashi :) Currently they have two Maiko working named Kanoka and Kanoyumi. Your student appears to still be in her training stage known as Shikomi. She has yet to debut as a maiko and if she passes her Shikomi training she will likely debut in the fall as a Minarai and then a Maiko. Since the other Maiko in her okiya start with the name "Kano" it is likely that her professional name will include those kanji as well :)

I keep up with a lot of the current Maiko and Geiko in Kyoto and I've done a lot of study into the process of apprenticeship and Geisha lives. Since you gave me the Okiya's name and the distric it was pretty easy to find :)
